Outdoor Afro celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Our national not-for-profit organization reconnects Black people to our lands, water, and wildlife through outdoor education, recreation, and conservation. Some examples of Outdoor Afro’s year-round activities range from fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and more.
A national nonprofit organization that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Founded in 2009 by Rue Mapp, Outdoor Afro reimagines the narrative of Black people in the outdoors, highlighting a rich legacy of outdoor adventure, conservation, and environmental stewardship. With a mission to disrupt stereotypes and cultivate a stronger connection to nature, the organization creates spaces where Black communities can explore the outdoors, foster meaningful connections, and reclaim their natural heritage.
Through a network of over 100 volunteer leaders in 30 states, Outdoor Afro organizes year-round outdoor experiences such as hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, and camping. These activities emphasize wellness, education, and community while helping participants build confidence and lasting bonds in outdoor settings. The organization also engages in advocacy and partnerships to address barriers to outdoor access, such as systemic racism, environmental inequity, and a lack of representation in the outdoor industry.
Outdoor Afro has earned recognition as a transformative force in outdoor culture, blending education, advocacy, and joyful celebration of nature. By amplifying stories of Black resilience and connection to the land, the organization inspires a new generation of outdoor leaders while fostering environmental stewardship. From partnering with brands and policymakers to launching initiatives like the Outdoor Afro Network, the organization continues to expand opportunities for Black people to lead, thrive, and connect in outdoor spaces across America.
