Black Cotton

Farming, Agro-tourism, Black outdoor history

A Black-owned cotton farm with a rich legacy spanning five generations. The company specializes in creating genuine and distinguished home décor, jewelry, and accessories handcrafted from cotton cultivated on their family farm.

Black Cotton is a Black-owned enterprise in Northampton County, North Carolina, founded in 2016 by Julius Tillery, a fifth-generation cotton farmer. The company blends tradition and innovation by crafting home décor, jewelry, and accessories from cotton grown on their 125-acre family farm. Rooted in a legacy that began with Reverend D.L. Tillery in the early 20th century, Black Cotton celebrates cotton's cultural and economic significance.

By reshaping perceptions of cotton, Black Cotton shifts its historical associations with oppression to a symbol of resilience and artistry. Their handcrafted items, such as wreaths and centerpieces, have reached customers in over 40 states and led to collaborations with brands like Vans. Beyond products, the company empowers Black farmers and revitalizes rural economies, fostering pride in agricultural heritage.

Founder Julius Tillery’s commitment extends to advocacy as the North Carolina State Coordinator for the Black Family Land Trust and roles on several agricultural councils. Through Black Cotton, he uplifts Black farming communities and highlights the cultural richness of cotton while leaving a lasting impact on sustainable farming and rural development.
