8 Seconds Rodeo & Photobook
Photography, Black Rodeo, Cowboy culture, Community Events
Eight Seconds" is a multifaceted project by photographer Ivan McClellan that celebrates Black cowboy culture through both a photobook and a rodeo event.
Black women and men have been cowboying since the beginning and have a thriving culture today. Our aim is to elevate this culture through media and live events encouraging young people to continue this legacy.
Photobook: "Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture"
Released in April 2024, this 128-page hardcover volume offers an intimate look into the lives of Black cowboys across the United States. The title refers to the eight-second requirement in bull riding competitions, symbolizing the challenges and triumphs within this vibrant community. McClellan's decade-long journey captures the essence of sportsmanship, community, and a deep connection to the land, bridging past and present narratives of Black rodeo culture.
8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo
In addition to his photographic work, McClellan founded the 8 Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo, an annual event that debuted in Portland, Oregon, in 2023. The rodeo celebrates Black cowboys and cowgirls, featuring events such as bull riding and barrel racing, and offers substantial prize money to participants. The inaugural event was noted for its positive energy and artistic presentation, with a focus on creating an inclusive space for the community.
Both the photobook and the rodeo aim to elevate and preserve the legacy of Black cowboys in America, encouraging young people to continue this rich cultural heritage.
